Watch our video explaining Data Gifting - an easy way to move spare data around all your family’s devices on EE, with you in control:

The service is available to all our EE Pay Monthly customers.  If you'd like to move all your family onto EE so you can use this service, just call our team or visit us online and we'll get the whole family set up.

What is Data Gifting?

How it works:

  • open the MY EE app
  • go to Family Usage
  • choose who needs data
  • choose who’s gifting
  • choose the amount
  • send the Data Gift

Once it’s done, we’ll text the person whose data has been moved - and the person receiving the Data Gift. Just keep in mind, you need at least 500 MB on your account to make a Data Gift.

Who can send Data Gifts?

Only the person who runs the account (usually the person who pays the bill) can send a data gift.

You can change who runs your account in My EE online >

Can Data Gifts be used abroad?

Data Gifts work in the same way as your monthly data allowance.

So if your plan lets you use data abroad, you can use your Data Gift abroad.

If your plan only lets you use data in the UK, your Data Gift can only be used in the UK.

To find out if someone on your account can use data abroad, go to the menu, and hit 'Plans & Add-ons'.

Why can't I send a Data Gift?

Maybe there’s not enough data on your account…

You need at least 500 MB on your account to make a Data Gift. If everyone’s out of data, get a data add-on in My EE (online or in the app).

Are you trying to gift data to someone on a shared plan?

If someone on your account is on your shared plan, you can’t gift data to them. But you can send a Data Gift to yourself, that they can use.

For example:

  1. Your daughter’s on your shared plan
  2. You’ve both run out of data
  3. Your partner has plenty of data left on their own plan
  4. You move 1 GB data from your partner’s plan to yours
  5. Both you and your daughter have 1 GB data to share

How long do Data Gifts last?

Data Gifts last until your allowances restart (everyone’s allowances restart on the same day).

You can find out when your allowances restart by logging into My EE.

How soon can I use a Data Gift?

Straight away! As soon you’ve sent the Data Gift, it’s ready to use.

Once it’s done, we’ll send a text to the person receiving the Data Gift - and the person whose data’s been moved.

Can I control how my devices are used?

As long as you run the account, you can control how your devices are used. So if you have kids, you can stop them:

  1. buying data
  2. using their phone abroad
  3. making international & premium rate calls
  4. using data

  1. open the app
  2. hit the FAMILY USAGE tab
  3. choose whose controls you want to change
  4. go to ‘Controls'

How long does it take for my controls to change?

It can take up to 24 hours, but shouldn’t be that long.

While the control’s updating, you’ll see a 'pending' message. Once it’s updated, the switch will turn on/off.

Keep in mind, if you leave the app after changing a control the 'pending' message won’t be there when you return. (But the control will still change).

Why's a control not turning on/off?

Has it been over 24 hours?

It can take a while for controls to change, but shouldn’t be longer than a day.

Does the control say 'pending'?

This means it’s busy updating. You’ll know it’s done when the switch is turned on/off.

Did you close the app after changing the control?

The 'pending' message won’t be there when you return, so it might seem as if nothing’s happening. But the control will still change within 24 hours.

What happens if I turn off 'use phone abroad'?

If you turn off  ‘use phone abroad’, the person using that device will be unable to make calls, send texts or use data outside the UK.
